Start & Improve Your Business Programme Division
As Papua New Guinea celebrates 30 years of Independence,
the Small Business Development Corporation's flagship Start
& improve Your Business (SIYB) Programme is proud to have
made a contribution to the development of the country.
The SBDC is the Government's lead agency in the promotion
of the Government's Small and Medium Enterprises policy.
It is a known fact that the International Labour Organisation's
SIYB programme - run by the SBDC - is the main capacity-building
programme in Papua New Guinea to assist aspiring and existing
entrepreneurs to establish themselves and grow to their full
potential.
Since 1996 - when the SIYB programme was introduced in PNG
- it has achieved remarkable results as evident by the number
of network partners and trainers involved with the programme.
It has been operating in Papua New Guinea since late 1996
with strong funding support from AusAID, co-funded by the
GoPNG as a Public Investment Programme of SBDC, administered
by SBDC as national executing agency and with technical assistance
from
the ILO.
Today, the SIYB programme has more 150 delivery partner organisations
and more than 270 well-trained trainers who can deliver quality
training to the masses.
The programme has also succeeded in addressing the diverse
needs in the market by developing tailor-made programmes for
specific target groups like fisheries, timber, agriculture,
the informal sector, schools, women and also those who cannot
attend fulltime training with their SIYB correspondence courses.
This programme has the full support of the Government and
it has a major role to play in implementation of the various
Government initiatives such as the Medium Term Development
Strategy and the development of Small and Medium Enterprises
(SMEs).
SIYB is an internationally-recognised entrepreneurial development
training programme implemented in 86 countries around the
world, and for the first time, it has been adapted for use
specifically in the fisheries sector and informal sector,
whilst education and agriculture sectors are currently being
pilot tested.
Papua New Guinea made history this year by exporting the
fisheries training programme to other countries of the South
Pacific.
The Start and Improve Your Fisheries Business (SIYFB) rogramme
- developed by the SBDC and the National Fisheries Authority
- ventured into the South Pacific with a workshop in Vanuatu
from June 13 to 29 for 15 fisheries development officers from
Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands.
These trainers will in turn conduct field workshops for the
targetted fishermen and women.
On the occassion of Papua New Guinea's 30 years of Independence,
the SBDC and the SIYB Programme Office congratulates all the
people of this great country and look
forward to continue being partners in development.
